The tumulus consists of an almost 180 m² quadrilateral cairn, a imposing stone structure. It is surrounded by three dry-stone walls arranged in terraces. Inside, the cairn houses two transepted megalithic burials with square lateral chambers crossing a corridor that opens to the southeast façade. The southern corridor provides access to four chambers, while the northern one serves two.
A bit of History
The study and valorization of the Tumulus des Mousseaux have highlighted the uniqueness of the transepted megalithic burials in this region. These monuments are typical of the Pornic area and emerged around the Loire estuary during the Neolithic period, representing an evolution from corridor graves with a single chamber.
Formerly known as "Druid Stones," the Tumulus des Mousseaux was restored between 1975 and 1977. It was part of a vast necropolis that is now partially destroyed or covered by housing developments.
