The Armand Aven Cave is a fabulous cave located "at the center of the Earth" in the Lozère department and near the Aveyron, Gard, Tarn, and Hérault. This deep gorge, over 300,000m³ in volume, is an unusual tourist site open for visits from spring to autumn. It is so large that it could accommodate a building as big as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.
The visit to the Armand Aven Cave begins with a funicular descent through a man-made tunnel dug into the rock down to over 100 meters underground. One arrives at a promontory overlooking a "forest" of more than 400 stacked plate-shaped stalagmites. These impressive stalagmites range from 1 to 30 meters in height, with the tallest holding a world record. The "forest" of the Armand Aven Cave is also one of the largest natural stalagmite forests in France and Europe.
The visit is accompanied by a voice-over commentary through sound and light shows depicting Jules Verne's character, who seemed to already describe this unknown cave more than 150 years ago. It is about an hour-long tour where sounds and lights projected on the stalagmites tell the story of one of France’s most mysterious caves. Discover the fabulous legends that circulated for years around this gaping gorge opening onto the Causse Méjean soil. Locals were afraid of it because this gorge used to swallow everything in its depths; it was nicknamed the Devil's Gorge.
The Armand Aven Cave is a unique experience to be shared with family, friends, alone, or in groups. It is a wonderful and fantastical world created by rainwater millions of years ago. You can also visit the souvenir shop, café, and snack restaurant on site, which are open every day.
